Can I request to be on the same team as someone else?
In tackle football, Players are placed on teams according to their age, weight and ability at the coaches’ discretion. This ensures that your child is placed at a level which is safe, fun and optimizes their chance for success. As a result, BRL cannot guarantee that you will play with an individual or for a certain coach.
In Flag Football and Basketball there will be a blind draft. EXCEPTION: Basketball coaches may select up to 2 "Coach's Picks" for his team. Immediate family members such as siblings and Head coach's children will be kept on the same team. This rule does not include cousins or assistant coach's children. Of course, these children can be placed on the same team through the two Coach's Picks if desired.
If I make the Middle School team, can I still play for the BRL Raiders?
Yes!! In fact, we encourage kids to still play recreation football since they generally will get more quality playing time than can be obtained at the middle school unlimited weight team. Same for Basketball and Volleyball.
If I make the High School Junior Varsity or Varsity team, can I still play for the BRL Raiders?
No. The VB Parks and Recreation By-Laws do not allow High school players to also play recreation football, volleyball or basketball. As a result, we advise parents and kids to give pause before trying out for the JV team unless you’re very confident you will receive quality playing time. In many instances, it’s easy to make the JV team but you don’t play. Once you are on the JV roster, you cannot play rec football even if you subsequently leave the High School JV team.
In Tackle Football ....What does 150lb and 125lb limit mean?
This is the MAXIMUM WEIGHT allowed to play. Some parents believe that their child must weigh, e.g, 125lb to play. This is not the case. In fact, most children in the 125lb program weigh 85 to 105lb. You must weigh under the designated weight (125 or 150lb) to participate. Special Midget Rule-12 year olds must weigh under 115lbs.
What is the difference between Recreational League and Pop Warner Travel League Football?
In a nutshell, it comes down to time and money. Pop Warner teams generally charge twice as much as BRL and require numerous fundraisers throughout the season. Travel football can be more competitive and some teams cut players at tryouts. BRL does not cut any player. The travel season is longer and PW teams often practice 4-5 times a week. Of course, PW games often involve travel. For the very best PW teams, there is an opportunity to play for regional, state and national titles but most do not achieve that level. BRL depends more on sponsorships than fundraisers. After August, the recreational league teams will practice twice per week, and play games on Saturday mornings. In VB, we are blessed with a very competitive Rec Football League. Championship games are held in the Sportsplex.
